Book Review: Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle

In the realm of queer literature, Bury Your Gays emerges as a bold exploration of familiar tropes, tackling the often tragic narratives that have historically dominated the genre. Having heard positive buzz about this novella, I was eager to dive in, especially considering the importance of diverse voices in queer storytelling.

Tingle’s approach to the well-trodden theme of tragedy is intriguing. He not only acknowledges the prevalent trope but actively engages with it through the lens of his protagonist, Misha. As the story unfolds, Misha grapples with his past while fighting against the conventions of queer narratives. This self-aware commentary adds depth to the book, allowing readers to confront the uncomfortable realities of loss and love within the queer experience.

While the novella offers a glimpse into Misha’s character and his struggles, secondary characters don’t receive as much exploration, leaving some threads tantalizingly underdeveloped. However, Tingle’s skilful storytelling and the depth of Misha’s character create a compelling anchor for the narrative. The tone strikes a balance between darker themes and light-hearted, modern comedy, offering a refreshing take on the horror genre. It feels less formal than many other works, and this informality lends itself well to the story’s unique premise.

One standout scene occurs in the forest, where the stakes become visceral and real. I found myself unprepared for the emotional impact of this moment, showcasing Tingle’s ability to intertwine horror with psychological depth effectively.

The pacing is brisk, fitting for a novella. While some moments could have benefitted from more exploration, the overall flow keeps readers engaged. Tingle masterfully utilizes past trauma as a tool for horror, giving readers insight into Misha’s psyche without losing momentum.

Though this was my first experience with Tingle’s work, it left a positive impression. If you’re seeking a light read that doesn’t shy away from serious themes and offers a unique narrative twist, I would recommend Bury Your Gays. It’s an interesting and unique exploration of the queer experience wrapped in a compelling horror narrative.

I’d rate it a solid 3 out of 5 stars. The story is well-told, and while it might not dive as deeply into every character, the overall experience is both captivating and memorable.
